Use of Preservatives in Tattoo Colorants and Permanent Make-Up

The German "Tätowiermittelverordnung", i.e. the Law for Tattoo Colorants and Permanent Make-Up valid in Germany, does not explicitly state which preservatives are allowed and which are not. As the Tattoo Colorants and Permanent Make-Up are slowly becoming classed as cosmetics we highly recommend the use of preservatives listed in the German Cosmetics Law (BGB 1997, Teil I Nr. 67, Anlage 6). Furthermore EU ResAP(2008)1 reads as follows:

- preservatives should only be used to ensure the preservation of the product after opening an by no means as a correction of insufficient microbiological purity in the course of manufacture and of inadequate hygiene in tattooing and PMU practice;

- preservatives should only be used after a safety assessment and in the lowest effective concentration.

Due to the wording of the German Tätowiermittelverordnung and the EU ResAP(2008)1 we highly recomennd only the use of preservatives either listed in the German Cosmetics Regulation or those listed in the EU Regulation (76/768/EWG) which has been updated several times.
